Today, I had the magnificent opportunity, as Mayor of the City of Whittlesea, to take part in a highly informative and deeply engaging tour of the Melbourne Market Authority (MMA) complex, located in Epping. I was honoured to be joined by my esteemed colleagues Councillors Cox, Lenberg, and Stow, along with several of our dedicated and highly capable Council officers.

Our tour, graciously led by the CEO of the MMA and key members of their senior management team, provided us with a comprehensive overview of the enormous scale, precision logistics, and economic significance of this 67 hectare wholesale fruit, vegetable, and flower market, the largest in Victoria and one of the most advanced in Australia.

What truly stood out was the operational sophistication and strategic foresight that underpins the MMA’s work. From advanced warehousing and temperature controlled logistics to the coordination of over 330 fruit and vegetable stands, 156 permanent stores, and a dedicated flower market, the MMA is an extraordinary engine of economic activity. It supports thousands of Victorian jobs, ensures a reliable fresh produce supply chain across the state, and plays a crucial role in food security.

We also had the privilege of speaking directly with several wholesale traders and clients operating on site. Observing their work firsthand reinforced how interconnected this precinct is to our municipality not just economically, but in the vital service it provides to residents, local grocers, and regional producers.

The Melbourne Market Authority’s ongoing commitment to innovation, stakeholder engagement, and future focused planning aligns closely with our Council’s vision for sustainable economic development, industry partnership, and community benefit. It is abundantly clear that the continued success and strategic evolution of the MMA will bring enduring value not just to their immediate clients and supply chain partners, but also to the broader community of the City of Whittlesea and beyond.

I extend my sincere thanks to the CEO and all MMA staff involved in organising this insightful visit. Your professionalism, transparency, and hospitality are greatly appreciated.

This was truly a tour that affirmed just how fortunate we are to host such a critical economic and logistical precinct within our municipality.
