Yesterday, as the Mayor of the City of Whittlesea, I had the privilege of attending the 40th Anniversary celebration of STEPS, a Concern Australia program whose dedication to supporting vulnerable children and young people has transformed countless lives over the past four decades. Concern Australia empowers children, youth, and young adults aged 5 to 25, creating opportunities to learn, grow, and thrive. Through programs in housing and homelessness support, education, employment pathways, and youth justice, they provide practical tools, guidance, and genuine care to those who need it most. The Steps Outreach Service is a shining example of this commitment providing long term, relational, and practical support to young people and families in Melbourne who are experiencing, or have experienced, homelessness. They offer someone to trust, someone who believes in them, and someone who has hope for their future. Founded on the vision of “an Australia where vulnerable young people and children have hope for a successful and positive life,” the organisation has stayed true to its mission walking alongside young people, listening to their voices, and helping them build strong foundations for the future. This milestone event was also an excellent opportunity to meet community minded people, including key stakeholders from the City of Whittlesea, and to discuss our Community Plan, Community Action Plan, and Affordable Housing Strategy initiatives. These conversations reinforced the value of collaboration between community leaders, service organisations, and local government in building a safer, stronger, and more connected community. As the City of Whittlesea continues to strengthen its support for young people, vulnerable families, and those at risk of homelessness, engagement like this ensure every young person has the chance to feel safe, supported, and empowered to achieve their potential. Congratulations to Anne Mitchell and the entire team, past and present on 40 years of service, advocacy, and life changing work. Your compassion in action continues to inspire and remains a vital force for hope in the lives of so many.
