Yesterday, As the Mayor, I had the privilege of working alongside an inspiring group of community members for several hours as we took direct action to address the ongoing issue of illegal roadside rubbish dumping along Plenty Road in Whittlesea, an area under the jurisdiction of VicRoads.

Together, we collectively walked approximately 9 kilometres and collected and removed over 5 cubic metres of rubbish. This included hazardous materials such as syringes and biowaste, rubbish thrown from vehicles, debris blown off trailers, and both illegally dumped construction materials and general domestic waste.

A massive thank you to Clive Denholm for his leadership and the entire Whittlesea Community Clean Up Group for their dedication and teamwork. I would also like to extend my sincere acknowledgement to Whittlesea Hardware, who generously cofunded the skip bin and provided their site as the staging point for this important community led initiative.

A heartfelt thank you also goes out to the 15 dedicated volunteers and 8 vehicles that supported this effort. Your contribution made a visible and lasting difference. I was pleased to confirm that the City of Whittlesea Council will collect and lawfully dispose of the 14 car tyres we recovered during the operation.

This was not just about removing rubbish, this was a statement.

We will not tolerate the dumping of rubbish in Whittlesea. Illegal rubbish dumping is a criminal offence under Victorian law. It’s disgusting. It’s dangerous. And we are DONE.
