Today, I had the absolute pleasure, as Mayor of our great City of Whittlesea, to roll up my sleeves, put on the gloves, and get down in the dirt with the incredible Friends of Hillcroft Park and our wonderful South Morang community.

Together, we planted 320 native trees, shrubs, and wildflowers, each one a small but powerful step towards rejuvenating our beautiful Hillcroft Park Reserve in South Morang. Despite the cold winds, steady rain, and mud under our boots, more than 43 passionate community locals came out, their smiles and energy far brighter than the weather.

Led with warmth, care, and tireless dedication by our organiser Kyoko, and backed by the fantastic support of our City of Whittlesea Council staff. The day was filled with energy and optimism. From digging and planting, to staking and protecting hundreds of seedlings, every person there helped shape a greener, healthier, and more vibrant future for Hillcroft Park Reserve.

What struck me the most was not just the planting, it was the conversations, laughter, and stories shared along the way. These moments remind me what community truly means, standing side by side, working together, and leaving something better behind then when we started.

A huge thank you to everyone who braved the weather, to Kyoko for her inspiring community spirit and leadership, and to our council staff for their commitment and hard work. The Friends of Hillcroft Park provide a service that goes beyond plants, they nurture community connections. If you would like to be part of future events and join this wonderful group, you can reach out to Kyoko at kyokoimazu@gmail.com.

Together, we have made a real difference. Hillcroft Park is becoming stronger, greener, and even more beautiful, a living reflection of the community that loves and cares for it deeply. Let’s keep building this momentum, one plant, one conversation, and one act of kindness at a time. I look forward to seeing you all again at the next planting day.
