Yesterday, I returned from attending the National General Assembly (NGA) of Local Government at the National Convention Centre in Canberra. Over two dynamic days, this flagship event brought together more than 300 mayors, deputy mayors, councillors, and council officers from across Australia to collaborate, learn, and shape the future of local governance.

As the Mayor of the City of Whittlesea and a voting delegate, I was proud to represent our municipality in the national deliberations. I participated in voting on 100 Notices of Motion, each calling on the Federal Government to work closely with State and Territory governments and local councils to address key issues impacting communities nationwide.

I voted on each motion insuring the best interests of the City of Whittlesea was represented.

I was honoured to move one of the most significant motions of the Assembly, on strengthening local government’s role in Emergency Management across Australia. This motion was passed unanimously by all delegates, highlighting the united commitment among councils to build stronger, safer, and more resilient communities.

In addition to these vital deliberations, I attended insightful presentations by Her Excellency the Governor General of Australia, the Minister for Regional Development, Local Government and Territories, and the Minister for Emergency Management and presentations on geopolitical influences on local councils, the evolving role of artificial intelligence in shaping smarter cities, and adaptive leadership in response to emerging local challenges.

The accompanying Expo showcased innovative solutions, technologies, and strategies to enhance council operations and future service delivery and I spoke with every exhibitor bring back with me vital current information.

I was honoured to attend alongside my fellow Whittlesea Councillors, Crs. Cox, Gunn, and Zinni, each of whom made valuable contributions on behalf of our community.

This was a highly productive and inspiring event, and I look forward to applying the insights gained to strengthen my leadership and performance as Mayor and further the work we do together for the City of Whittlesea.
